Overview

This past semester, the students graduating with the Design Strategies Certificate were tasked with breaking out into four groups, each of which worked with the organization Planet Texas 2050 to tackle and find opportunities related to Climate Change in Texas. Texas is a state that has many different regional areas and is affected by many different types of disasters such as flooding, drought, and forest fires.

My group, self-named the "Texas Disasters" decided to focus our research specifically on disasters in Texas and what peoples' feelings and actions are when they are notified that a hurricane or other disaster is headed their way. What are their steps to prepare for a disaster, and after a major disaster, such as Hurricane Harvey which rampaged the southern coast in 2017, what are their major grievances?

Our guiding project statement for this semester of work became...

"We seek to understand how Texans experience disasters and prepare for the increased likelihood and impact of natural disaster caused by climate change."

Below, is our final slide deck presentation which was given through Zoom (due to Covid-19). This slide deck walks through our process step-by-step.

Below, is our chapter in the Climate Design Studio's final deliverable, a book walking through each team's process, and final, fully formed pitches on how we can work to increase awareness of climate change in Texas.

After the Course

After our final presentations in May, Texas Disasters was invited to present our project at Houston-Galveston Area Council's Clean-Water Initiatives webinar on Regional Resilience and Preparation for Extreme Weather Events. The presentations at this webinar examined potential solutions, tools, and recommendations to improve regional resilience to weather events.

Presented in November, a link to the webinar presentations will be available in the near future. Learn more about The Houston-Galveston Area Council here.
